Asparagus

Our first homegrown asparagus ever. We planted it 2 years ago when we bought our house. It loves the sunny spot we chose for it.

Asparagus officinalis has been eaten for over 2500 years, the Ancient Greeks and Romans enjoyed it. It is a member of the Liliaceae family which includes the onion family.

Aside from being a great perennial crop to fill the gap in the 'lean season' in spring, what are the benefits of eating asparagus?

As a vegetable:

💚Asparagus is considered very nutritious as it has high levels of many nutrients including vitamins A, C, Bs, folate (B9) and K and copper, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium.

💚It contains high levels of fibre.

💚 It is low carb so it's suitable for those following a keto diet.

Medicinally the roots, spears, seeds and juice are used (yes asparagus is also a herb):

🌱Many of us know about its diuretic properties (with the unfortunate side effect of smelly urine).

🌱Due to its antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, there is evidence to show that it may be a cancer preventative and help with hypertension and T2 diabetes.

🌱Studies have shown it has antimocrobial, antivral and immunostimulatory effects.

🌱Liver support has been shown in trials.

Whatever the case, I love eating this and it just makes it another reason for me to enjoy spring.
