Maca

Maca, or Lepidium meyenii, is also known as Peruvian ginseng and is sacred to the Peruvians. It is native to a small part of the Andes where grows at high altitudes. In Peru it is known as ‘she’ and is used as medicine and food and to support many things in the body. It is a member of the cabbage family and is a bit like a type of turnip or radish. It comes in black, red and yellow, with black rarest and yellow most common. It is the luck of the draw as to which colour grows from which seed. Different colours of maca are believed to be of more support for certain conditions, with traditional Peruvian healers knowing which combinations may maintain and support the health of a person.

It is interesting, as we are commonly told in the media that raw vegetables have higher nutrients, but this is one plant that is traditionally activated by drying in the sun at high altitudes then cooking as it is thought to be more nourishing for the body. It is usually purchased as a dried powder and can be eaten as part of a sweet or savoury dish. The taste is like a mild caramel. It is delicious added to smoothies, baking and bliss balls as well as savory dishes. I eat Seleno maca as a small snack very morning. I melt 3T raw coconut oil then add 3T maca powder and mix in while heating. I then freeze the mixture in silicon mini muffin trays and store in the freezer.

Maca has many benefits and the world is only discovering what the Peruvians have known for centuries.

  • Maca may support the body’s stress response and help support the body when a person has adrenal fatigue. We all know how stress impacts on our day to day living and how it has been associated with many health issues.

  • Supporting the body’s balance to even out ups and down associated with PMS and menopause is something some women may notice. Some teenagers may also notice clearer skin when they take it.

  • Maca may support physical performance, giving people more get up and go.

  • Maca may have support feelings of well being when people take it on a daily basis.

I sell Seleno maca products as their products have been activated and they taste good too. Seleno maca, taken in specific combinations for certain issues, may support the body’s healing journey. If you would like to know if these products are right for you, contact me and we can chat.
